The Invitation

The St John Ophthalmic Association

First International Congress, September 5 – 7th 2018, Jerusalem

‘Ophthalmology – State of the Art’ Expertise beyond Borders

In 2016 a group of surgeons in London formed an association to support the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group. Our intent was to unite regional and international colleagues in support of the Hospital, and to forge new academic partnerships with the Order.

Over the past year, due to widespread international support, we have grown and now exist as the St John Ophthalmic Association (SOA). We represent St John Priories across the world, and are formed of 3 branches: Europe, Americas, and Asia Pacific, with 8 SOA representatives across the regions.

In 2017 the SOA ran a symposium in Jerusalem with Palestinian, Israeli and European colleagues. Building on this initiative, in 2018 the Association is hosting a wider international congress for the Order in the Notre Dame Centre, a Vatican-owned property in Jerusalem.

Our Palestinian steering party is based at St John in Jerusalem and Gaza. Regional partners and colleagues are contributing from all over Israel, Jordan and Egypt, and our international partners join us from Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region.

The Congress will run over two and a half days, using four halls, and cover the leading developments in ophthalmology. Our opening ceremony will take place in the Muristan in the Old City on the evening of Tuesday 4th September. After the first day we meet for dinner in the rooftop restaurant of the Notre Dame Convention Centre, and on Thursday the Gala dinner is hosted in the gardens of the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

Further details (registration, accommodation) are available here on the Association’s website
