Exchange program between St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group, the Swedish
Order of St John, and St Erik’s Eye Hospital in Stockholm
Exciting postgraduate opportunities are developing for our staff in SJEHG. This May, after years of planning, a new clinical observership program was launched in Sweden. Thanks to the vision and dedication of our partners in St Erik’s Eye Hospital (Dr Elin Bohman, and Göran Kindåker, CEO), and the Swedish Order (Henric Ankarcrona, Kommendator, and Dr Richard Kuylenstierna, Hospitaller), two of our staff from Jerusalem visited Sweden this spring.
Dr. Rajaá Masri, a trainee in oculoplastic surgery (managing injuries, tumours and other diseases around the eyelids) and Mr Saddam Hamoudeh (our deputy charge nurse in theatres in Jerusalem) spent 5 days at St Erik’s hospital observing the workings of the hospital, learning and exchanging ideas. A meeting was held on the last day with a talk on the work of the hospital, joined by medical and support staff from St Erik’s.
The St John Eye Hospital Group and the Ophthalmic Association are enormously grateful to our Swedish partners. We look forward to developing this collaboration, both in Jerusalem at this year’s Hospital Summit, and a dedicated Sweden-SJEHG cultural and academic workshop, provisionally planned for spring of 2020.
Dr David Verity
Hospitaller, Order of St John
